PROTECTED AREAS IN ALBANIA

Although a small country, Albania is very rich in biological diversity. The extraordinary diversity of ecosystems and habitats includes 3,200 host plants, 2,350 non-host plants and 15,600 species of conifers and non-conifers, most of which are threatened at the global or European level. Albania has recently made significant progress in expanding of the network of protected areas from 5.2% of the country’s territory in 2005, to 16% of the territory in 2014. Today, 799 protected areas make up about 18% (5,263 km²) of the territory. Most of them are defined in the Natural Monument category (747) and most are small in size.

The National Agency of Protected Areas (AKZM) is the institution responsible for the management of the national system of protected areas in Albania, where the daily management of protected areas is delegated to 12 Regional Administrations of Protected Areas (AdZM) as part of AKZM- of.
