Ministry of Environment

The recreational values that biological diversity and landscape bring are an asset, which can be used to promote tourism development. This is a duty and responsibility for the protection and development of these values for current and future generations. If we are not able and responsible for the protection of biological and natural diversity, there is a risk of losing their values, which help tourism as a tool to promote development in Albania. Hunting, fishing, mountaineering, as well as other activities, which are attractive for tourism, require Albania to take the necessary measures to protect its environment and biodiversity. In recent years, the development of the concept of ecotourism is a direction assessed as important and which creates the possibility of economic benefits, especially for Protected Areas, but not only and which ensures the sustainable use of biodiversity components.

Albania is under threat due to inappropriate practices and development related to mass tourism. With the current quantity-based development model, the projected increase in tourism development in the region will continue to damage the landscape, affect soil erosion, and put pressure on endangered species. At the same time, straining or overusing available water resources, increasing the amount of waste and discharging pollution into the sea, among others, is also a cultural divide. Construction related to the development of tourism has also caused great damage to the fragile coastal and marine ecosystems in the country. Given the ever-increasing number of visitors, it is clear that the impact of tourism on the land and landscape is great.
